Men's Fashion & Lifestyle Blog

With the season coming to a rapid close, I wanted to take a minute to look back on one of the most incredible summers I have ever had. While I had spent a summer in NYC interning during college (that time I got hit by a car and ended up in the hospital without insurance…), this was my very first summer as an official New Yorker. Don’t get me wrong, the humidity can be a betch, but New York City is the place to be during the summer!

To pay homage to my #SUMMER15, I have compiled a list of some of my favorite memories. I am always looking for new experiences, so please let me know if there’s anything I’ve missed out on!

Steven Willem Boat - State Of Silver

What better way to spend a warm summer evening than sailing on the Hudson River with friends enjoying some wine and cheese? The classic sailboat that accommodated our trip was spacious and perfect for the occasion. The weather was beautiful and the pinkish skies provided some perfect photo-ops. To top it off, I got to meet Lady Liberty; definitely an unforgettable experience!

NYC Gay Pride 2015 State Of Silver

Gay Pride this year was incredibly special, as it was decided days prior that Federal marriage benefits would become available to same-sex couples in all 50 states. The progress the LGBT community has made in the past few years has been astounding, and it was amazing to see so many people join forces and celebrate the advancement. The world is becoming more and more accepting every day, and I feel so blessed to be a part of this revolution towards full equality.

Steven Willem Long Island - State Of Silver

I love escaping the city after a strenuous week in the city. My favorite experience this summer was my visit to the Hempstead House at the Sands Point Preserve. The imposing 50,000-square Gold Coast mansion was built in 1912 and measures 226 feet long and 128 feet wide. The Great Gatsby-esque estate’s backyard is embellished with beautiful landscaping and offers breathtaking views of the Hempstead Bay. As the estate is currently maintained by Nassau County, visitors are able to enjoy the beach. I will definitely be back in years to come!

Williamsburg, VA - State Of Silver

Many people are surprised when I tell them I love country music. The American South holds a special place in my heart because it is reminds me of why I wanted to come to the USA growing up in the Netherlands. I have visited many Southern states and am hoping to one day live the simple life. This year, Chris and I decided to celebrate my birthday in style and took a road trip to Williamsburg, VA. I had never been before and found myself in awe of its colonial character. It turned out that we booked a 2 bedroom apartment at theHistoric Powhatan Resort that could easily hold 8 people, so I would love to go back with a group of friends one day. Besides exploring the town, we also enjoyed a day at the beach. Some word of advice: whatever you do, do not go to Virginia Beach; it’s awful.

Boozy Brunch Steven Willem

Boozy Brunch has to be one of my favorite NYC traditions. Many places in the City offer unlimited cocktails for a couple of hours during the weekend. I love to meet up with some friends and enjoy the nice weather while getting (very) tipsy. I am never able to do anything else after, as day drinking tends to make me extremely tired. Some of my boozy brunch places are Osteria CottaCuba, and Havana Alma de Cuba.

Dog Park - State Of Silver

It’s become quite clear that I loved spending the summer in NYC, but I am quite confident that my two babies Little Andy and Prince Charley couldn’t agree more. Considering the limited living space, I often feel bad for my pups when winter confines them to our apartment. I am blessed to live right next to Central Park, and I am proud to say that I have maximized its utility this summer. After playing with the dogs, I take out a blanket, wine, and cheese for the perfect relaxing day!

SoulCycle State Of Silver Blog

I wish working out were my hobby, but it’s not. This summer, however, I gave SoulCycle a try and absolutely loved it. The loud music, uplifting instructors, and emphasis on privacy make the SoulCycle experience awesome. I usually go to the original West 77th location, but they recently opened a more spacious studio on West 92nd, as well. I would advice to choose your instructor wisely by researching their playlist and popularity, as the $35 fee is quite steep. My personal favorite is Monique — she will have you cycle your socks off!

Maidstone Landing - State Of Silver

I often hear childhood stories from my American friends about fruit picking, and since I missed out on that life-altering experience, Chris and I decided to go peach picking in Long Island. The day was filled with fun activities such as eating corn on a cob (whatever that means), collecting fruits, and relaxing on the beach (the photo was taken at Maidstone Landing). The peaches I picked were delicious and I am so glad I now have my own fruit-picking experience. Also, we bought this ah-may-zing Apple Rhubarb pie at Briermere Farm – a must-try!
